Dr. John Mann is a fixed-term Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University (MSU). He is also the Undergraduate Program Director in AFRE. From 2014 until 2020, he primarily worked with the Center for Economic Analysis (CEA), contributing expertise and regional economic assessments for Michigan stakeholders and those in the surrounding states. During the same period, he worked closely with North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD) conducting research, extension, and outreach related to innovation systems, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer. Between 2019 and 2020 as an NCRCRD faculty fellow and guest researcher with the Economic Research Service (ERS), his research and extension specifically focused on the U.S. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Then, in 2020, his focus began to transition to include more undergraduate teaching, and during COVID he provided leadership to AFRE faculty new to the online learning environment. As the Undergraduate Program Director, Dr. Mann is highly engaged with AFRE students and organizations, such as the Food Marketing Association, as well as the AFRE undergraduate office. Prior to completing his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University in 2012, he worked for 17 years as a broadcast newsroom manager, which has provided a unique perspective for his research, teaching, extension, and outreach.
