The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is proud to announce that Emily Silver has been awarded the Certified Forester (CF) certification.
WASHINGTON, D.C. —The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is proud to announce that Emily Silver has been awarded the Certified Forester (CF) certification. This prestigious certification recognizes Emily Silver's exceptional knowledge and expertise in forestry. The CF program was first developed in 1994, with the creation of a competency-based examination in 2003. The CF certification program is long recognized as the gold standard in forestry and is awarded to individuals who meet rigorous standards of experience, education, and professional ethics. It signifies a high level of competency and commitment to the field of forestry, ensuring that certified professionals are well-equipped as a leader who manages and cares for our forests.
About Dr. Silver:
Dr. Silver is currently serving as Associate Chairperson, Director of Graduate Studies, and Associate Professor of Human Dimensions of Forestry at Michigan State University. Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Silver worked for the USDA Forest Service’s Northern Research Station as a Research Forester. Dr. Silver is also serving as the Co Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Society & Natural Resources, as president of the Michigan Forest Association, and serves on the board of the American Biochar Institute and the Society of American Forester’s Forest Science and Technology Board.
Dr. Silver’s research uses self-reported and observational data on human behavior, specifically on attitudes, values, preferences, and intentions that may (or may not) lead to behavior. She also collects experimental data on a variety of natural resource management topics (e.g., agroforestry, bioenergy, mass timber) and uses predictive and exploratory modeling techniques to understand how behavior and human interaction leads to natural resource management outcomes.
Dr. Silver’s work focuses most on forested systems, both rural and urban. Her work is meant to inform better management, stewardship and conservation of trees and other green spaces with the overall goal of improving human health and wellbeing while keeping the environment healthy and functional.
About the Certification:
The CF certification program is designed to elevate the standards of practice in forestry and was developed with the assistance of professional foresters. It promotes the development and dissemination of knowledge and skills necessary for the effective management of forests, which are vital for enhancing the quality of life for everyone. Having earned the CF in 2026, Dr. Silver is required to maintain the standards of professional practice and provide evidence of Certified Forestry Education (CFE) hours in order to recertify every three years. These CFEs help provide evidence that CFs acquire the most updated knowledge and skills in forestry.
About the Society of American Foresters:
The Society of American Foresters is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry. Founded in 1900, SAF represents thousands of forestry professionals and promotes the sustainable management of forest resources for the benefit of society.
