Michigan’s cottage food community is about to take an exciting step forward. On May 21 at 7 p.m., the Michigan State University (MSU) Product Center, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and MSU Extension’s health and nutrition educators, will host a free statewide webinar to officially launch the new “Cottage Food Business Voluntary Registration” program.

Learn More and Register

This event marks a major milestone for Michigan’s cottage food entrepreneurs, designed to strengthen consumer confidence, support small food businesses and provide a clearer pathway for operators who want to demonstrate their commitment to safe, transparent food production.

As Michigan’s Cottage Food Law has recently undergone important updates, this webinar will be the first opportunity for cottage food operators, farmers market vendors, and food business beginners to learn exactly how the new system will work and how it can benefit their business.

This seminar brings together the experts who helped shape and interpret those changes, allowing participants to directly learn more about the most accurate, up‑to‑date information available.

Attendees will receive:

  • A review of the new Cottage Food Law changes
  • An overview of the new Cottage Food Business Voluntary Registration program
  • An introduction to MSU Extension’s expanded cottage food education seminars
  • A live Q&A session with staff from the MSU Product Center, MDARD, and MSU Extension

This is the first public walkthrough of the voluntary registration system — making the May 21 webinar a must‑attend event for anyone selling or planning to sell cottage food products in Michigan.

The official Cottage Food Business Voluntary Registration link will be posted on the MSU Product Center website and will go live on May 21. The one‑time $50 registration fee will support program administration.

Whether you’re a seasoned cottage food operator or just beginning your journey, this webinar will equip you with the knowledge and confidence you need to navigate the new changes and take advantage of the voluntary registration program.

Register today to join us on May 21 for this important webinar!
