Michigan 4-H State Award Spotlight: Trent Simons
Trent Simons has been recognized as an outstanding 4-H member in the Michigan 4-H State Awards Program.
Trent Simons is 13 years-old and a member of the Junior Master Gardeners Club in Otsego County. In just four years with 4-H, he has achieved notable success, including two Grand Champion awards in gardening and two Best of Show titles at the Otsego County Fair. In June 2025, Trent was named the winner of the junior Michigan 4-H State Award for Gardening and Horticulture.
A Michigan 4-H State Award is the highest honor bestowed on a Michigan 4-H member and provides an opportunity to receive recognition for their engagement in rich learning experiences that result in outstanding knowledge and life-skill development. State award applications are divided into four categories: Mark of Excellence essay contest (10-11 years old), junior state award (12-15 years old), senior state award (16-19 years old) and group awards (13-19 years old).
“4-H has had a great impact on my life and my health,” said Trent.
In 2025, Michigan State University Extension recognized outstanding 4-H members in the Michigan 4-H State Awards Program following the opening session of 4-H Exploration Days on June 18. Learn more about winner, Trent Simons.
What other projects have you participated in outside your award area?
Last year, I became an expert in worm composting. This project was important to me because I learned how to conduct a science experiment with worms. I also discovered how essential worm composting is for the health of your soil.
What are some skills you’ve learned in 4-H?
Some skills I learned in 4-H are learning to effectively grow microgreens. I had to pick the best seeds, containers and soil. I also created a L.L.C. and learned how to do marketing, sales and budgeting.
How has 4-H helped you grow as a leader?
4-H has allowed me to learn from others and teach others about gardening, which has helped me to mature socially in many ways.
What are some ways you give back to your community through 4-H?
I have volunteered by teaching senior citizens how to grow microgreens and I have also enjoyed teaching kids aged 2-5 how to plant and grow flowers.
What unique opportunities/experiences have you had through 4-H?
My club ran a bake sale at local event called the Art in the Garden Festival. The money we raised went to our club and the Otsego Conservation District, which went towards their community garden.
How has your 4-H involvement influenced your future plans?
My 4-H involvement has influenced me to be an engineer one day.
