FOR 202: Introduction to Forestry

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Historical development of forestry, forest ecology, multi-use management, silviculture, forest measurements, ecosystem services and forest products.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS and STRUCTURE
This course will be delivered through a blend of online (quizzes, exams, discussion, assignments) using the course management system Desire2Learn (D2L) and face-to-face (lab exercises, lectures). You will need your MSU NetID to login to the course from the D2L homepage (http://d2l.msu.edu). In Desire2Learn, you will access online lessons, course materials, and additional resources. The instructor will meet individually with students by appointment via zoom. Emails will be answered as soon as humanly possible. All course activities must be submitted by the due dates noted in D2L for each assignment/discussion post or quiz.
COURSE OUTCOMES
Students who successfully complete this course will:
- Understand basic tree biology, forest ecology, and common forest management practices (silviculture).
- Identify a variety of tree species, forest products, and forest history.
- Perform basic tree measurements.
- Understand common forest management goals and the concepts of multi-use management.
COURSE DELIVERY
This is a hybrid course with both asynchronous online and in-person components.
